Privacy Policy
Draft for legal review. This text is not final until PictoryTale AS confirms it before sales open.
This Privacy Policy describes how PictoryTale AS ("PictoryTale", "we", "us") handles personal data when you visit the MotionTale website, buy a license, or use the MotionTale desktop software.
PictoryTale AS is the data controller. Contact: privacy@pictorytale.com. We process personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as adopted by Norway under the EEA agreement, the Norwegian Personal Data Act, and the UK GDPR.
The short version: MotionTale processes your videos on your own computer. We never receive your videos or the animations made from them.
1. What stays on your computer
Your videos, the animations and scenes MotionTale produces, your project files and your settings are stored and processed locally. The software does not upload them and contains no usage analytics or advertising trackers.
2. Data we collect
When you buy a license:
- Your email address, and the name and billing country you give at checkout
- A record of the purchase: date, amount, and payment references from Stripe
- We do not receive or store your card number; Stripe handles payment details
When you activate or deactivate the software:
- Your license key
- A computer code: a one-way fingerprint derived from a hardware identifier, used to tie a license to a computer. It does not contain your files, name or location
- The software version and the time of the request
When you visit this website or the software contacts our server: technical data such as IP address, browser or app type, and request time, kept in server logs.
When you write to us: your message and contact details.
3. Why we use it and our legal basis
- Selling and delivering your license, and activating it on your computers: performance of our contract with you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b))
- Accounting and tax records: legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c))
- Preventing fraud and misuse of license keys, and keeping the service secure: legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f))
- Answering your questions: legitimate interest, or contract where it relates to your purchase
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it.
4. Who we share it with
We use the following service providers, who process data on our behalf or as independent controllers:
- Stripe (payment processing)
- Supabase (license database, hosted in the EU)
- Vercel (website and server hosting)
- An email delivery provider, for sending license keys
- Professional advisers and authorities, where required by law
5. Downloads during setup
During installation and setup, the software may download required components, such as machine-learning models, from third-party hosts including Hugging Face and GitHub. Those hosts receive your IP address as part of the download and handle it under their own privacy policies.
6. International transfers
Some providers are located in, or may process data in, the United States. Transfers outside the EEA are protected by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework for certified providers, Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission, or other safeguards under Chapter V of the GDPR.
7. How long we keep it
- License and activation records: for as long as your license is valid, so you can keep activating it
- Purchase and accounting records: five years after the end of the financial year, as required by Norwegian bookkeeping law
- Server logs: up to 90 days
- Correspondence: up to 24 months
8. Cookies
This website does not set advertising or analytics cookies. Stripe sets cookies on its checkout page that are necessary for payment and fraud prevention.
9. Children
MotionTale is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18 without a parent or guardian's consent.
10. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability.
To exercise a right, email privacy@pictorytale.com. We respond within one month. Deleting your license record means the license can no longer be activated on new computers.
You may lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Norway this is Datatilsynet (datatilsynet.no). EEA users may contact their local authority and UK users the Information Commissioner's Office.
11. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures, including encryption in transit, access controls and signed license files. No system is completely secure.
12. Changes and contact
We may update this policy. Material changes will be announced on this website. The date at the top shows the latest revision.
